Requested revision
Standard: | 802.1Q-2014 | Clause: | 8.8.5 |
Clause title: | Dynamic VLAN Registration Entries |
Rationale for revision
Clause 8.8.5, item b) states that Dynamic VLAN Registration Entries are stored in a Port Map based on outbound Port. I believe the phrase "outbound Port", as used here, can mislead the reader and needs some clarification since the Dynamic VLAN Registration Entries are also used for ingress VLAN filtering. Clause 8.6.2 (Ingress Filtering) states that frames with a VLAN ID not in the member set can be discarded. Clause 8.8.10 (Determination of the member set for a VID) states that Dynamic VLAN Registration Entries can add VLAN IDs to the member set. Therefore Dynamic VLAN Registration Entries can apply to ingress ports.
Proposed text
Add a note in 8.8.5 that states "NOTE 1 - Dynamic VLAN Registration Entries can be accessed by ingress port or egress port". It is worth noting that the phrase "outbound port" is used in many places throughout Q; with that in mind I would not suggest a broader change since the impact would be huge. References to "outbound Port" are included in clause 6.9.4, 6.16.6, 8.8.x, 10, 20.9.10, 26.11.x, 35.2.4.x, L.3.1.x and P.2.
Impact on existing networks
There is no impact by making this clarification.
