Minutes for 0213: The range of msgTxHold and the range of its MIB object lldpV2MessageTxHoldMultiplier are not consistent

2018-11-05 6 Nov 2018 Concall The origin 802.1AB standard specified a range of 2..10 for lldpMessageTxHoldMultiplier in the MIB, but it had no definition of the variable or range in the base text. In 802.1AB-2009, the definition in the text was added with default value and range as specified by ballot comment #13 of the resolution on draft 1 (http://www.ieee802.org/1/files/private/ab-2009-drafts/d1/802-1ab-rev-d1-0-dis.pdf). It appears the MIB was never updated and has always had a range of 2..10 since the very beginning. Technical experts review
2018-11-06 6 Nov 2018 Concall Changing the MIB would require the current object to be deprecated and incur more changes to the document. It was questioned whether the current base text range of 1 to 100 is justified and correct. A multiplier of 1 doesn’t make sense and a multiplier of 100 would allow a maximum TTL of more than 4 days. The MIB range of 2 to 10 supports a max TTL of 10 hours. NOTE: in 11.4 Security considerations for LLDP base MIB module it is pointed out that large values of a calculated TTL are problematic. Proposed decision is to change the base text range to match the MIB and YANG module using 802.1ABcu as the vehicle. Technical experts review
2018-11-13 Nov 2018 Plenary It was discussed that LLDP implementations are required to support the MIB or an equivalent management interface and therefor the range that is and has been specified in the MIB would be adhered to. Thus, we can change the base text in the definition to align with the MIB and the forthcoming YANG module will do the same. 802.1ABcu is the vehicle to perform this and the editor has agreed to make the change.
